Financial support

There are many scholarships and grants available. The options and conditions are outlined below. For many of the scholarships, the Department screens candidates. You will be informed through your address@umontreal.ca if you have been awarded financial assistance.

PhD students in the Department of History may be eligible for complete financial assistance. For more information, see below.

Alma Mater Scholarships

Description :

A $5,000 scholarship for students with exceptional academic records and who accept an offer of admission to a Université de Montréal Faculty of Arts and Science graduate program.

Students do not need to apply. The departments and schools select candidates to be submitted for approval to the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Angers-Poulin Merit Scholarship

Description :

The Angers-Poulin Merit and Recruitment Scholarship is intended to encourage research into different aspects of European society and culture in the literature and the humanities sector (film studies, history, art history, French-language literatures, philosophy), from Antiquity to the present.

Mgr Olivier-Maurault Scholarship

Description :

A fund created in 1955-1956, thanks to a subscription, organized by the University, of friends of Mgr Olivier Maurault, former Rector of the University, and UdeM staff, to set up a fund in the bishop's memory.

The Mgr Olivier-Maurault Scholarship is intended to encourage research work and thesis writing by master's students in the literature and humanities sector of the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Eligibility criteria :
  • You must be enrolled full-time in a master's-level research program.
  • You must have completed at least 2 terms of courses in the master's program at the time of application and plan to start writing your these no later than the fall term.
  • You must have a GPA of at least 4.
  • You must be enrolled in the master's program in classical studies or in one of the following departments: English Studies, History, Art History and Film Studies, Linguistics and Translation, Comparative Literature, French-Language Literatures, Literature and Modern Languages, or Philosophy.
Deadline :

The application (1 original and 4 copies) must include:

  • A covering letter in which you describe your achievements relating to your field of scientific study or career development and explain why you believe you deserve the scholarship (maximum 500 words).

In the letter you must state where you are in your master's-level studies (number of terms of coursework and thesis preparation, steps completed) and your planned timetable. You must mention your achievements showing your aptitudes and competencies relating to your proposed research and career aspirations. In addition to experiences related directly to your field of study and research, you may mention significant accomplishments in other fields (sports, arts, community, etc.) and explain how they contribute to making you a better candidate for the scholarship.

  • A description of your research proposal or career development proposal (maximum 500 words).
  • A letter of recommendation from your thesis supervisor or the professor responsible for your career development proposal, preferably in French (maximum 500 words).
  • A letter of reference from the Department Director (maximum 500 words).
  • Your undergraduate and graduate transcripts. You must submit originals, with the exception of those for diplomas from the Université de Montréal. The Department will add the transcript for the winter term.

Other forms of financial support

If you are a master's or doctoral student, you may finance your studies by taking on a position as a teaching or research assistant or a lecturer.

Under the collective agreement between the Université de Montréal and the Syndicat des étudiants et étudiantes employé(e)s de l'Université de Montréal (SÉÉEUM), eligible students must apply for positions posted by the Department of History.

These positions are much more than a source of financial support: they offer valuable and relevant work experience. 


Teaching assistant

A teaching assistant (TA) is a Université de Montréal student, full time at the undergraduate level or generally full time at the graduate level, who assists a professor or lecturer in supporting and supervising students.

Duties include:

  • Invigilating exams
  • Correcting assignments and exams
  • Providing help with documentation
  • Monitoring students
  • Performing demonstrations
  • Supervising interns
  • Supervising assignments
  • Leading seminars

Research assistant

A research assistant is a Université de Montréal student, full time at the undergraduate level or generally full time at the graduate level, hired to assist professors, researchers and units with research work.


Lecturer

A person hired part time by the University to deliver class lectures.

Duties include:

  • Preparing and teaching courses according to different pedagogical methods and formulas.
  • Updating course content.
  • Preparing teaching materials according to the pedagogical methods and formulas used.
  • Evaluating students' performance, including, if applicable, revising student evaluations and preparing and correcting deferred examinations.
  • Availability or supervision relating to course preparation and delivery .

Working and studying

The study/work programs of the Ministère de l'Éducation, de l'Enseignement supérieur et de la Recherche help some students in financial need to find part-time jobs on campus. Ask about it!
